Left Back: Player Profile
By all accounts, Liverpool’s primary target at left back is Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez; however, we have already covered Milos Kerkez in a separate data dive, which you can read HERE. To avoid repetition, we will suggest another alternative to Kerkez, and one who would be available for much less than the £40 million price tag placed on the Hungarian.
In terms of the profile of player Liverpool should target in this position, we will suggest a well-rounded fullback who could compete with Andrew Robertson for the starting role but would not ultimately be expected to completely usurp the Scotsman.
Our suggestion must be very capable at both the defensive and offensive facets of his game. As Robertson is now into his 30s, we will also suggest a player at the peak of his powers who could very well perform at a high level for the next five years. As left back is a definite area of need within the squad, we will also suggest a player who competes at a high level in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
In this instance, we will not require the player to be positionally versatile, as Liverpool have not needed this from a left back at all in the time that Robertson and Tsimikas have been at the club. In the hypothetical scenario that Liverpool miss out on their top target, we will assume that other options within the Premier League, such as Rayan Aït-Nouri, Antonee Robinson, and Lewis Hall, would be deemed too expensive to sign for a secondary target, and so we will not require our pick to have any Premier League experience.
Instead, this player would be expected to replace the outgoing Kostas Tsimikas but to a higher standard, and so Liverpool would likely sign a direct replacement for Andrew Robertson in a future transfer window. As this signing will also have Virgil Van Dijk at his side, we will not require this player to be very physically dominant, as Van Dijk has shown that he is more than physical enough to protect that side of the Liverpool defence by himself. Lastly, it would be beneficial if the player is seen to be easily attainable, as Liverpool will hope to avoid overpaying for a player as a result of their obvious need to recruit in that position.
