Winger: Player Profile
The ever-reliable Paul Joyce of The Times has reported that Liverpool are preparing an overhaul of their attack this summer. In the first part of this piece, which discussed the players likely to depart the club in the transfer window, we predicted that Liverpool will keep the majority of their attackers for at least one more season. Regardless, with Federico Chiesa likely to depart the club and Dominik Szoboszlai receiving criticism for his lack of goal-scoring or creative output in the advanced attacking midfield role, we expect Liverpool to strengthen.
Mohamed Salah is due to take part in the African Cup of Nations between the middle of December and January, and so this addition will need to be adequate cover on the right wing. The player must also be comfortable playing in attacking midfield so as to offer a different dimension to Szoboszlai.
As this player would be expected to help ease the loss of Salah’s goal contributions, as well as offering more than Szoboszlai in the attacking phase, our pick is required to have achieved double digits in both non-penalty goals and assists this season.
We do not necessarily require this player to be either a natural right winger or attacking midfielder, as long as they have the attributes required to perform this role. As this player would be asked to fill multiple different positions according to the needs of the manager, positional versatility is a must.
There is also little chance that any recruitment this summer will be with the intention of replacing Salah or Szoboszlai’s starting place, and so this player must also be accepting of a squad player role. However, as this player would also be expected to play in multiple different positions when called upon, the player must have experience playing in a similar tactical setup to that of Liverpool’s.
As this signing would be expected to fulfil a squad player role within the squad, we will not require our suggestion to have experience in one of Europe’s top five leagues. As long as he has the goal-scoring and creative output required, as well as a skill set that is transferable to the Premier League, then we will prioritise this player’s profile over the quality of the league.
We also will not require this player to be a pressing machine or to rank particularly high in his defensive data, as Liverpool already have that profile of player within the squad with Szoboszlai. The Hungarian also already offers his supreme physical attributes to the squad in this position, and so we will not require our suggestion to be physically imposing.
Lastly, as Liverpool are likely to invest more heavily in a starting striker this summer, it would be beneficial for the club to identify a signing who would not require a huge level of investment but would be value for money in terms of output versus investment.
