Diogo Jota

Diogo Jota began his youth career at Portuguese fourth-tier club Gondomar, where he spent eight years before joining Paços de Ferreira in 2013. He was fast-tracked to the first-team squad in October 2014 at just 17 years old, quickly establishing himself as a regular. In 2015, he signed a five-year contract but remained with the club for just one more season, finishing his stint with 14 goals in 41 appearances.

In March 2016, Atlético Madrid announced the signing of Jota for €7 million, but he was immediately loaned back to Portugal with FC Porto for the 2016–17 season. He scored a first-half hat-trick in October and ended the season with 9 goals and 7 assists.

Despite his solid campaign, Atlético opted to send him out on loan again—this time to the Championship with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Jota made an immediate impact, becoming one of the standout players in the league.

Wolves secured his permanent signing in January for a reported £12 million. He played a key role in their 99-point, Championship-winning season, scoring 17 league goals.

Jota’s form continued in the Premier League, where he contributed 16 goal involvements in his debut top-flight campaign as Wolves qualified for the Europa League. The following season, he further solidified his reputation as one of the top players outside the "Big Six," scoring 16 goals in all competitions, including 6 in 8 Europa League matches. He left the club with 44 goals in 139 appearances.

In September 2020, Liverpool signed Jota for £45 million—a fee widely seen as good value for a proven Premier League and European performer. He hit the ground running, becoming the first player since Robbie Fowler to score 7 goals in his first 10 appearances for the club.

He also netted Liverpool’s historic 10,000th goal. However, a leg injury in December sidelined him for three months—marking the beginning of what would become a recurring issue with injuries.

Jota returned to full fitness the following season and enjoyed his most active campaign to date, making 55 appearances and registering 29 goal contributions as Liverpool reached the Champions League final. Unfortunately, injury troubles resurfaced in the 2022–2023 season, with both a preseason hamstring injury and a calf issue in October keeping him sidelined until February. He did, however, sign a new contract with the club in August 2022, underlining Liverpool’s belief in his long-term importance.

The quality that Jota brings to the pitch has never been questioned. He has been a clinical finisher for Liverpool, scoring crucial goals along the way. However, there’s no denying that injuries have plagued his time at Anfield. Despite this, Jota has played an integral role in helping the club secure major honors during one of its most successful periods. Yet, he has struggled to regain the consistency he enjoyed in his early seasons at the club.

In his most recent campaign, Jota became a Premier League champion and firmly established himself as one of the league’s top forwards. His attacking awareness, positional flexibility, and end product have earned him near cult-hero status among Liverpool fans, with many considering him one of the best finishers in the club’s modern history.

There have been whispers suggesting that Jota’s time at Liverpool could be nearing its end this summer, but all signs point to the club being keen to retain a player who Arne Slot likely considers his preferred starting striker.
