Federico Chiesa

Federico Chiesa is the son of Enrico Chiesa, a Fiorentina legend, and began his football journey at the age of five with Settignanese, where he was coached by another Viola icon, Kurt Hamrin. After five years, he joined Fiorentina’s youth academy at the age of 10.

Chiesa progressed steadily through the ranks, playing for Fiorentina’s Giovanili side before making his U19 debut in the 2014–2015 season. He signed his first professional contract in February 2016 during a breakthrough campaign that saw him record nine goal contributions in 36 appearances.

He signed a contract extension in January 2017 and continued his development, with his third and fourth seasons proving to be his most prolific at the club—scoring 23 goals and providing 15 assists across all competitions.

In October 2020, Chiesa joined Italian giants Juventus on a two-year loan deal worth €10 million, with an obligation to buy for €50 million. He impressed in his first season in Turin, contributing 26 goal involvements in 46 games. That year also marked a career highlight on the international stage, as he played a pivotal role in Italy’s UEFA Euro 2020 triumph. Although he narrowly missed out on the Player of the Tournament award to Gianluigi Donnarumma, Chiesa’s performances were widely praised.

Unfortunately, his second season at Juventus was marred by a serious injury—rupturing his ACL against Roma in January 2022. After ten months out, he returned in November and worked his way back to form, scoring a personal-best nine Serie A goals in his fourth and final season with the club.

Following the appointment of Thiago Motta as Juventus manager, Chiesa was told he was not part of the club’s future plans and was made to train alone. Liverpool capitalised on the situation, securing a bargain £12.5 million transfer. The move was seen as a calculated gamble in the hope that Chiesa could rediscover his pre-injury form.

So far, his opportunities have been limited under Arne Slot, with just 400 minutes played across all competitions. While Chiesa has performed reasonably well when called upon, he appears to have struggled to gain the full trust of the manager. With Liverpool already crowned Premier League champions in Chiesa’s debut season, fans will be hoping to see more of the Italian winger before the summer transfer window determines his future.
