Joe Gomez

Joe Gomez began his career in the youth‑setup at Charlton Athletic, which he joined aged ten. At just 13 years old, he made his debut for their U‑18 team. Although several bigger clubs showed interest, he remained with Charlton and signed a professional contract in 2014.

In October 2014, aged 17, he made his first professional appearance for Charlton and went on to record 21 senior appearances. His versatility and composure impressed Liverpool, who secured his transfer for around £3.5 million when he turned 18.

Brendan Rodgers handed Gomez his first‑team debut in a Premier League match at Stoke City, where he provided the assist for Philippe Coutinho’s winner. Shortly after, under Jürgen Klopp’s management, Gomez suffered an ACL injury while representing England’s U‑21s, sidelining him for an extended period.

Although injuries have intermittently disrupted his Liverpool career, Gomez has established himself as a vital squad member. From 2017 to 2020 his pace, positional sense, and ball‑playing ability were instrumental to the team’s success. While he has not been an automatic starter in recent seasons, his professionalism and adaptability have never been in question.

Still seeking his first professional goal, Gomez’s positional versatility has seen him fill every slot across the back four—and even feature in defensive‑midfield on occasion. As Liverpool’s longest‑serving first‑team player, he is entering his tenth summer at the club, and rumours suggest his Anfield chapter may soon draw to a close.
