Luis Diaz

Luis Díaz began his youth career at just six years old with Atlético Junior. His standout performances in the 2015 La Copa Americana de Pueblos Indígenas—a tournament for indigenous South American players—earned him the attention of first-team coaches. As a result, he was sent to Atlético Junior's development side, Barranquilla FC, where he scored two goals in 21 appearances.

He was promoted to the first team the following season, featuring for over 2,500 minutes and scoring twice. Díaz’s breakout campaign came in 2017–2018, when he netted 16 goals and registered seven assists.

Ahead of the 2019–2020 season, Díaz had reportedly signed a pre-contract agreement with Cardiff City, but the transfer ultimately fell through. Turning down a lucrative move to Zenit St. Petersburg, he instead opted to join Portuguese giants FC Porto for €7 million.

He made an immediate impact in his debut season, contributing 20 goal involvements in 50 appearances and winning the league title.

Díaz continued to impress in Portugal and quickly established himself as one of the Primeira Liga’s standout players. The 2021–2022 campaign proved to be his finest in a Porto shirt—despite leaving halfway through the season, he recorded 19 goal contributions in just 18 league matches.

His explosive form attracted interest from several English clubs, notably Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. While Spurs made a formal bid in the January transfer window, Liverpool acted swiftly to hijack the move, accelerating their summer plans to secure Díaz in a £37.5 million deal.

The Colombian winger was immediately integrated into Jürgen Klopp’s starting XI. His strong performances continued in England, where he was named Man of the Match in Liverpool’s FA Cup final win over Chelsea and played a key role in the club’s run to the Champions League final.

Díaz began his first full season with Liverpool by helping the Reds defeat Manchester City in the FA Community Shield and made a bright start to the Premier League campaign. However, a knee injury sustained against Arsenal in October sidelined him for seven months, with Díaz only returning to action in April toward the end of the season.

Díaz returned to full fitness for the 2023–2024 season as Liverpool competed across all competitions. He featured in 51 matches and registered 20 goal contributions, but sections of the fanbase criticised him for a perceived lack of end product. However, the following campaign proved to be his most impressive to date. Díaz recorded 19 goal contributions and played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s triumphant Premier League title win under new manager Arne Slot.

His strong end-of-season form silenced many of his earlier critics and reaffirmed his importance to the side. Recent reports indicate that both the player and the club are keen to renew his contract beyond its current 2026 expiry. Although there have been rumours linking him with a move to Saudi Arabia, there is currently little indication that Liverpool are willing to part ways with a player whose work rate, flair, and attacking dynamism continue to be vital to the team’s success.
